English Tenses
Tenses in English grammar indicate the time of action or state expressed by a verb. They are broadly classified into three main categories: Present, Past, and Future, each of which is further divided into four subcategories.
1. Present Tense
a) Simple Present Tense
- Usage: To express general truths, habitual actions, and scheduled events.
- Structure:
- Affirmative: Subject + base verb (+ s/es for third-person singular)
- Negative: Subject + do/does not + base verb
- Interrogative: Do/Does + subject + base verb?
- Examples:
- She reads every morning. (Affirmative)
- She does not read every morning. (Negative)
- Does she read every morning? (Interrogative)
b) Present Continuous Tense
- Usage: To describe ongoing actions happening now or temporary actions.
- Structure:
- Affirmative: Subject + am/is/are + verb(-ing)
- Negative: Subject + am/is/are not + verb(-ing)
- Interrogative: Am/Is/Are + subject + verb(-ing)?
- Examples:
- They are playing football. (Affirmative)
- They are not playing football. (Negative)
- Are they playing football? (Interrogative)
c) Present Perfect Tense
- Usage: To express actions completed at an unspecified time or actions continuing into the present.
- Structure:
- Affirmative: Subject + has/have + past participle
- Negative: Subject + has/have not + past participle
- Interrogative: Has/Have + subject + past participle?
- Examples:
- I have finished my homework. (Affirmative)
- I have not finished my homework. (Negative)
- Have you finished your homework? (Interrogative)
d) Present Perfect Continuous Tense
- Usage: To describe actions that started in the past and are still continuing.
- Structure:
- Affirmative: Subject + has/have been + verb(-ing)
- Negative: Subject + has/have not been + verb(-ing)
- Interrogative: Has/Have + subject + been + verb(-ing)?
- Examples:
- She has been working all day. (Affirmative)
- She has not been working all day. (Negative)

2. Past Tense

3. Future Tense
