Voice: Active and Passive

Voice

Active Voice:

The Active Voice is a way of constructing sentences where the subject of the sentence performs the action. In an active sentence, the subject is usually the doer of the action, and the object is the recipient or affected entity. The structure of an active sentence follows the pattern: Subject + Verb + Object.

Sentence Structure:

The basic structure of an active sentence is:

  • Subject (the doer of the action) + Verb (the action performed) + Object (the receiver of the action).

Examples of Active Voice:

  • She (subject) reads (verb) a book (object).
    • Translation: “She is performing the action of reading a book.”
  • They (subject) built (verb) a new park (object).
    • Translation: “They are performing the action of building a new park.”
  • John (subject) wrote (verb) a letter (object).
    • Translation: “John is performing the action of writing a letter.”

Passive Voice:

The Passive Voice is a way of constructing sentences where the subject of the sentence receives the action. In a passive sentence, the focus is on the recipient of the action rather than the doer. The structure of a passive sentence follows the pattern: Subject + Form of “To Be” + Past Participle of the Verb + (By + Agent). The agent (the doer of the action) is optional.

Sentence Structure:

The basic structure of a passive sentence is:

  • Subject (the receiver of the action) + form of “to be” + past participle of the main verb + (by + agent).

Examples of Passive Voice:

  • A book (subject) is read (verb) by her (agent).
    • Translation: “The action of reading is received by her.”
  • The cake (subject) was eaten (verb) by the children (agent).
    • Translation: “The cake is being consumed by the children.”
  • The letter (subject) was written (verb) by John (agent).
    • Translation: “The action of writing the letter was done by John.”

Comparison: Active vs. Passive Voice:

To understand the difference between active and passive voices, here are some key comparisons:

  • Active Voice: Focuses on the doer of the action (the subject).
    • Example: “She painted the picture.”
  • Passive Voice: Focuses on the receiver of the action (the object).
    • Example: “The picture was painted by her.”
  • Active Voice: The subject (the doer) is clearly stated.
    • Example: “He sings a song.”
  • Passive Voice: The focus is on the action or the object rather than the doer.
    • Example: “A song is sung.”
  • Active Voice: More direct and concise.
    • Example: “They built the house.”
  • Passive Voice: Often used when the doer is not known or not important.
    • Example: “The house was built.”

How to Convert from Active to Passive Voice:

To change an active sentence into its passive equivalent, follow these steps:

  1. Identify the object in the active sentence.
  2. Make the object the subject in the passive sentence.
  3. Use the appropriate form of the verb “to be” (present, past, future, etc.) based on the tense of the original verb.
  4. Add the past participle of the main verb.
  5. (Optional) Include the agent (the doer of the action) using “by.”

Example Conversion from Active to Passive:

  • Active Sentence: “The teacher explains the lesson.”
    • Passive Sentence: “The lesson is explained by the teacher.”
  • Active Sentence: “They built a new school.”
    • Passive Sentence: “A new school was built by them.”
  • Active Sentence: “She is baking cookies.”
    • Passive Sentence: “The cookies are being baked by her.”
